Chapter 11

Paige

When the others all headed to the back, Paige went instead to the piano to collect her violin. In all honesty, it was probably ridiculous, but something about her sister’s arrival and presence had thrown her ability to be cool with it all into unforeseen turmoil. Still, she was not about to ruin Nelson’s big day by being all hormonal about it. No, she would do what she always did when Taylor deigned to show up, stuff it all and just try to get through it.

She had retrieved the violin and bow from atop the piano and was stowing it back in the case at the front row when the organ music wound to an end. Instantly the shift in sound allowed the happiness from the back to reverberate through the sanctuary. Laughter and excitement rolled across the abyss to and right over her, and she tried not to feel so alone all the way down here so far removed from it all.

“Oh, my,” the woman from the organ said, coming across the slightly raised platform and right over to her, “you kids were… well, that was just the loveliest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Surprise lit through Paige. She straightened and brushed at the hair from the edge of her face. Without pause the woman came all the way over to her, stopping only inches away.

“I tell you, it put joy in this old heart to know that music like that still exists in this world and that it’s not going to die with the likes of me.”

Paige smiled and laughed softly. “It was our pleasure.”

“Well, it was our pleasure to be so blessed by hearing it.”

“Thank you.”

“No, hun, thank you,” the woman said. “And listen to me, you keep playing together, okay? The two of you. Don’t ever lose that connection or take it for granted. When you’re as old as I am, you realize it’s those small connection points that make all the difference. It’s important to hold onto them and treasure them—especially with the ones you love the most.”

Wordlessly, Paige smiled and nodded just as more laughter came from the back. Her back was to the door, and she didn’t want to be rude and look like she’d rather be back there than talking with the woman. However, the woman was wise enough to understand what Paige did not say.

“Well,” the woman said, “I shouldn’t keep you from your celebration.” She put her hand out and onto Paige’s wrist. “Just promise me you’ll find a way to keep playing. You have a gift. You really do. God gave it to you to use for His Kingdom. Don’t forget that, okay?”

Just why the moment seemed to be illuminated with soft glowing light, Paige didn’t know, but when she thought back on it later, that’s how she remembered it. “Okay. And thank you.” She bent forward and gave the woman a hug. “And thanks for playing too. It was beautiful.”

The woman nodded. “It’s my little way of bringing some light into this world.
